Ganglion cysts are non-cancerous growths that will often show up as bumps on the top of your foot. They tend to grow on a tendon, ligament, or muscle and they are characterized by the fact that the soft sack is filled with fluid, but it doesn’t move around at all. The fluid is thick and jelly-like and ganglion cysts may sometimes be found in clusters. Since they can hide underneath a layer of skin, they can be difficult to identify without the help of your podiatrist.

Sometimes a ganglion cyst is found growing on a nerve which may cause a tingling sensation in your toes or other parts of the foot.

Treatment for ganglion cysts may include the following:Fluid removal—The fluid in the cyst is removed with a hypodermic needle and a steroid solution is added to prevent a return of the cyst.Custom orthotics—Specially-designed custom-made orthotic inserts can divert pressure from the cyst area and allow it to heal more rapidly.Ganglion cysts are not always painful and may not cause any significant trouble. But be certain to pay attention to any unusual bumps on your feet, especially if they change color or size rapidly since it may be a sign of skin cancer. Cysts that do not respond well to conservative treatments may require surgery to treat properly.
